Pairs

Four people play in two pairs. Your partner sits across from you. It is played with 40 cards (no 8, 9 or 10) and each player gets 10.

Cards and points

From strongest to weakest: Ace (11 points), 7 (10), King (4), Jack (3), Queen (2), 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2 (0 points). Each hand has 120 points.

Dealing

One player shuffles, the one across cuts and the one to the left of the shuffler deals. The dealer chooses: take from the top (the top card is trumps, stays with them and they deal to the left) or take from the bottom (deal to the right and the bottom card, the last one, stays with them and is trumps). The trump card stays visible until they play it.

Tricks

Whoever shuffled plays first. You must follow the suit of the first card; if you cannot, play any card, including trumps. The highest card of the suit led wins, or the highest trump. The winner leads the next trick.

Winning the hand

The pair with more than 60 points wins the hand: 61 to 90 is worth 1 on the score, 91 to 119 is worth 2 and 120 (clean sweep) is worth 4. 60–60 is a tie. In the next hand, whoever shuffled deals and the player to their right shuffles.

The table

Hands are played one after another and the score adds up. If someone leaves mid-hand, a bot finishes it for them. If they leave at the end of a hand, the table ends and the score resets to 0.
