Buraco rules
Canastas with 2 decks and wildcards. 1 vs 1 or in pairs
Players and cards
Two players (each on their own) or four (in pairs, partner opposite), with 2 decks of 52 cards. Each gets 11 cards and 2 dead hands of 11 are set aside, one per team. The rest is the stock. The 2s are wild.
Melds
A meld has 3 or more cards: a run in the same suit (the Ace can go before the 2 or after the King) or a set of the same rank. Each meld can have at most 1 wildcard. A meld with 7 or more cards is a canasta: clean without a wildcard, dirty with one.
Your turn
Draw one card from the stock or take the whole discard pile. Then lay down new melds or add cards to your team’s melds, and end by discarding one card (not the one you just took from the discard pile).
Dead hand and going out
When you run out of cards you take your team’s dead hand and carry on. To go out (end the hand) your team must have taken its dead hand and have at least one clean canasta. If the stock runs out, the hand ends without anyone going out.
Scoring
At the end of each hand, each team adds the cards in its melds (Ace 15, 2 10, 8 to King 10, 3 to 7 5), plus 200 per clean canasta, 100 per dirty canasta and 100 for going out; it subtracts the cards left in hand and 100 if it did not take its dead hand. The first team to reach the limit (1500, 2000 or 3000) wins.
